The report, published by a news agency, is based on a recording of a phone call between Vitkoff and Yuri Ushakov, foreign policy adviser to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. In that conversation, Witkoff is said to have given tips on how to get Trump’s attention by praising his peace efforts in the Middle East. This advice appears to have been echoed in a later phone call between Trump and Putin.
On the Russian side, the publication of the phone calls was seen as an attempt to torpedo the peace negotiations.
