The film industry in California is facing upheaval as many productions move away from Hollywood. While this is seen as a setback by some, Marine Corps veteran Joe Ramirez sees it as an opportunity. By founding the National Entertainment Awards Academy for Military & Veterans (NEAAMV), Ramirez wants to pave the way for veterans to Hollywood. This organization offers workshops, scholarships and a film festival to support veterans in the film industry.
Ramirez recognized that veterans already possess many of the skills sought after in Hollywood: technical know-how, discipline and compelling stories. But they often lack the network to gain a foothold in the film industry. The NEAAMV aims to close this gap and provide veterans with the right contacts and opportunities.
A highlight of NEAAMV is the MV Shorts LA Film Festival, which takes place on November 8th at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Culver City, California. Short films by veterans and non-veterans telling military stories are shown here. The best films can win up to $1,000 in scholarships and the opportunity to be shown on the streaming platform VetStreamTV.
The challenges for veterans breaking into Hollywood are numerous. The film industry is heavily influenced by networks and personal contacts, which makes it difficult for outsiders to get started. But with support from mentors like Jane Austin, an experienced stuntwoman and chair of SAG-AFTRA’s LA Military Committee, veterans can gain the knowledge and connections necessary to be successful.
The NEAAMV has already attracted prominent supporters, including actors Cybill Shepherd and Dennis Quaid. The first gala in May welcomed over 600 guests, and the success of this event demonstrates the organization’s potential to promote veterans in the film industry. Ramirez emphasizes that it’s not just about giving out awards, but rather building a sustainable support system for veterans so they can achieve long-term success in Hollywood.
