In Leipzig, the conflict between the Verdi union and the online and mail order retailer Momox has escalated further. Numerous employees of the company, which specializes in trading used media and second-hand clothing, took part in a one-day warning strike. The demands of the employees are clear: more respect, fair wages and recognition of the retail and mail order collective agreements for the regions of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
The strike, in which around 80 employees on the night and early shifts took part, illustrates the dissatisfaction of the workforce. Verdi union secretary Ronny Streich emphasizes that periods of high sales, such as Black Friday, significantly increase the pressure on employees. These times not only bring high profits for the company, but also an increased workload, which is reflected in overtime and increased sick leave.
A central concern of the union is the recognition of collective agreements, which are intended to ensure fairer pay and better working conditions. Migrants among Momox employees who come from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Venezuela and India are particularly affected. These employees are additionally burdened by existential fears because they have to fear for their residence permit if they lose their job. Fixed-term employment contracts increase this uncertainty.
The Verdi union is determined to keep up the pressure until the employer side is ready to enter into negotiations. The union describes the current wage situation as unsustainable because it is not sufficient to ensure an adequate standard of living. The escalation of the industrial dispute in Leipzig could send a signal to other locations and further increase the pressure on Momox.
