The ongoing U.S. government shutdown has significantly impacted air travel in the United States. On Tuesday, airlines had to cancel 1,200 flights, although the staffing situation at air traffic control has improved slightly. These improvements come at a critical time, as the government shutdown has been ongoing for over a month and is the longest in U.S. history.

The impact was even more severe on Monday, when 2,400 flights were canceled and 9,600 flights were delayed. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had ordered airlines to reduce their daily flights by 4%, increasing to 6% by Tuesday. These measures were taken to deal with the loss of air traffic control staff caused by the closure.

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to cut the pay of air traffic controllers who didn’t show up for work and welcomed the resignations of employees who didn’t dutifully show up for work. These threats highlight the tense situation in which the aviation industry currently finds itself. The FAA is currently understaffed by approximately 3,500 air traffic controllers, further exacerbating the situation.

Airlines and the FAA are currently discussing how and when to lift flight reductions as an end to the government shutdown is in sight. On Monday evening, the Senate voted for legislation to end the shutdown, which would fund the government until January 30th. If the House of Representatives does not pass the law, flight disruptions could increase dramatically over the weekend, warned Transport Minister Sean Duffy.
