A 28-year-old Army National Guard member from Alamogordo, New Mexico, is at the center of a volatile case involving the illegal export of military equipment. Canyon Anthony Amarys was arrested after attempting to send a military radio to Russia in violation of U.S. export control law. This law regulates the export of certain defense products and requires authorization from the US Department of Commerce.
The investigation began when Amarys met a suspected Russian intelligence agent in February 2025 and signed an agreement confirming his secret cooperation with a Russian intelligence service. He undertook to photograph a military installation at Fort Riley, Kansas, and to obtain a helicopter radio for the Russian army. In March 2025, Amarys acquired the radio and planned to export it to Russia via Romania.
However, US authorities were able to confiscate the radio before it left the country. The investigation is being led by the FBI’s Kansas City office, supported by the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command, the Kansas National Guard, the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The case highlights ongoing efforts by foreign intelligence agencies to obtain sensitive U.S. military technology.
Amarys now faces the possibility of a 20-year prison sentence if convicted. The case raises questions about security measures within the National Guard and underscores the need for increased controls to prevent such security breaches. Experts warn that such incidents could undermine confidence in military security and threaten national security.
