The president of the European Commission survived two motions of censure this Thursday, October 9, after receiving the support of the majority of those elected in the European Parliament.
In the vote on the motion of censure presented by the extreme right, 179 votes were recorded in favor, 378 against and 37 abstentions.
The motion of censure triggered by the extreme left received 133 votes in favor, 383 against and 78 abstentions.
The outcome of these two motions of censure was already expected, but the number of votes against shows a relative increase in support from MEPs for the president of the European Commission in relation to the motion of censure in July – at the time, the number of votes against was 360, a figure below that recorded this Thursday.
Even so, Ursula von der Leyen still has to worry about her margin of support, taking into account that in July 2024 she received the favorable vote of 401 out of 720 MEPs for her confirmation as president of the community executive.
