US President Donald Trump said that New York City Mayor-elect Zahran Mamdani should seek to establish a new relationship with Washington, and asked him to show kindness instead of adopting angry rhetoric towards him.
Trump spoke in an interview with Fox News Channel a day after Mamdani achieved a historic victory in the elections, becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City. The US President said that he was willing to talk with Mamdani, but stressed that the elected mayor of New York must respect Washington – and its financial support for the city – if he wants to succeed.
He considered that Mamdani’s speech was characterized by anger towards him during the recent period, and asked him to be kinder.
Despite his political disagreement with Mamdani, Trump said, “I would like to see the new mayor of New York achieve good results because I love the city.”
Trump had launched a sharp attack on Mamdani in previous statements following the announcement of the election results that took place on Tuesday, and said, “On November 5, 2024 (the date of his election to the presidency of the United States), the American people regained their government and sovereignty, but we lost part of this sovereignty in New York, and we will deal with that soon, do not worry.”
He claimed that the elections were held by “unfair methods” and accused the Democrats of choosing a “communist candidate” in New York. He claimed that many New Yorkers would soon migrate to other cities to escape communism.
Mamdani’s speech
On the other hand, Zahran Mamdani expressed his willingness to work with Trump in order to serve the people of New York, and he told reporters, “I am still interested in having a conversation with President Trump about the ways in which we can work together to serve the people of New York,” referring to “fulfilling the electoral promises he made,” including addressing the cost of living.
Like Trump, Mamdani placed the high cost of living, the impact of inflation, and rising consumer costs at the core of his election campaign in which he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Mamdani had previously directed criticism at Trump against the backdrop of the electoral promises made by the Republican billionaire to address the high cost of living, and his later effort to suspend food aid after assuming the presidency in the face of the government “shutdown.”
After his victory on the back of promises he made to make public transportation in the city free, control rents, and free nurseries, Mamdani said, “What scares Republicans across the country is the fact that we will actually implement this agenda.”
