Three astronauts returned safely to Earth on Tuesday after completing an eight-month science mission aboard the International Space Station. This mission aimed to improve life on Earth and support future space expeditions. U.S. astronaut Jonny Kim and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky landed safely with parachute support southeast of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan at 12:03 p.m. ET. They left the space station on December 8 at 8:41 p.m. aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft.
After landing, the crew underwent medical examinations before returning to the recovery area in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Kim will then travel on a NASA aircraft to the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. During their 245 days in space, the crew orbited the Earth 3,920 times and traveled nearly 104 million miles. The launch to the space station took place on April 8th. This mission was the first spaceflight for Kim and Zubritsky, while Ryzhikov completed his third trip into space, spending a total of 603 days in space.
During her stay in the orbiting laboratory, Kim contributed to a variety of scientific investigations and technological demonstrations. He studied the behavior of bioprinted tissues with blood vessels in microgravity to advance space-based tissue production to treat patients on Earth. He also evaluated the remote control of multiple robots in space for the Surface Avatar study, which could support the development of robotic assistants for future exploration missions. Additionally, Kim worked to develop DNA-like nanomaterials in space that could improve drug delivery technologies and support new therapeutics and regenerative medicine.
This mission highlights the importance of international cooperation in space, especially in times of geopolitical tensions. The scientific knowledge and technological advances achieved during this mission could not only lay the foundation for future space expeditions, but also enable significant advances in medical research and the development of new technologies on Earth. The astronauts’ return marks the end of a successful mission that made valuable contributions both scientifically and technologically.
