The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it carried out a joint military operation with the Syrian Ministry of Interior targeting more than 15 warehouses and weapons depots belonging to ISIS in southern Syria and the Damascus countryside.
Centcom said – in a statement yesterday, Sunday – that American forces participated with units from the Syrian Interior, between 24 and 27 last November, in destroying the warehouses through air strikes and field bombing operations.
She explained that the warehouses that were targeted contained mortar ammunition, missiles, multi-caliber machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials used in manufacturing explosive devices.
Commander of US Central Command, Brad Cooper, confirmed that the joint operations “aim to prevent ISIS from regaining its strength.”
He added, “This successful operation weakened the organization’s offensive ability further, and we will not allow ISIS (ISIS) to reach a level that poses a threat to the United States and its allies.”
This operation comes after the US Embassy in Damascus announced, on November 11, that Syria had officially joined the international coalition against ISIS, which Washington has led since 2014.
The embassy said at the time that “Syria has become the 90th partner in the coalition,” and described the move as “a pivotal moment in the history of Syria and in the global war against terrorism.”
It is noteworthy that the international coalition against ISIS, in which dozens of countries have participated since its founding, has carried out during the past years a wide series of military operations against the organization in Syria and Iraq. While the Syrian government was not a party to it before announcing its recent accession.
