Mental illness has traditionally been defined by its negative impacts, but there is increasing evidence that it is also associated with remarkable strengths. Studies show that certain psychological states are associated with increased creativity, social sensitivity, and emotional awareness. Long-term studies show that some people not only recover, but also achieve above-average well-being.
Recognizing these ‘silver linings’ could help transform treatment, reduce stigma and offer patients a more hopeful path forward. Mild forms of schizophrenia, bipolar spectrum disorders and hypomania are associated with higher creativity. Depression and mood disorders are associated with increased empathy and social awareness.
A study from the University of Colorado Boulder shows that people with a history of depression often show a greater willingness to cooperate. Another study found that while people on the bipolar spectrum experience more social conflict, they also have larger social networks and feel more social support.
The study authors emphasize that many people in remission look back on their darkest times as catalysts that helped them develop resilience and self-confidence. These findings are not intended to trivialize the suffering of those affected, but rather to offer hope that positive outcomes are possible. A more holistic view could help preserve unique strengths while keeping harmful elements of the condition at bay.
