Reuters quoted sources as saying that the ousted President of Guinea-Bissau, Omar Sissoko Embalo, arrived – yesterday, Saturday – in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, days after the army seized power.
On the other hand, Agence France-Presse, citing Congolese government sources, said that Embalo arrived in Brazzaville yesterday. A source close to the Congolese government said on condition of anonymity that “Embalo arrived in Brazzaville around noon in a private plane.”

Soldiers overthrew the Embalo government last Wednesday, before the results of the presidential and legislative elections that took place at the weekend were announced, continuing the state of political instability in this small Portuguese-speaking country.
Meanwhile, the largest opposition party spoke of a “heavily armed militia storming” its headquarters in the capital, Bissau, following the coup that followed the elections and brought the army to power.
The army seized power on Wednesday, on the eve of the announcement of the preliminary results of the national elections. Embalo initially left for neighboring Senegal, after the army installed Major General Horta Enta as interim president on Thursday.
Guinea Bissau, the coastal country in West Africa between Senegal and Guinea (Conakry), has witnessed 4 coups d’état and a series of coup attempts since its independence from Portugal in 1974, and the election results there have long been a subject of controversy.
The African Union – the day before yesterday – suspended Guinea-Bissau’s membership in its bodies, two days after the coup.
