The history of women in the US military is a story of the fight for equality and recognition. A new documentary, scheduled for release in 2026, sheds light on this long journey. Producers Joy Bronson and Ellen Haring, both veterans, are committed to telling the stories of the women who fought against the restrictions and prejudices of the military.
Joy Bronson, a Gulf War veteran, originally wanted to serve as a pilot in the Navy, but encountered numerous restrictions for women. Her perspective changed in 2012 when she read about a lawsuit brought by two women against the Defense Department to overturn the ban on women in combat units. This encounter led to collaboration with Ellen Haring, a former Army colonel who had firsthand experienced the challenges of gender discrimination in the military.
Haring entered West Point in 1980, shortly after the academy opened to women. Despite their progress in the army, access to combat units remained closed to women for a long time. These restrictions led to frustration as women were kept in supporting roles despite often acting heroically in combat situations. The documentary ‘The Fight to Fight’ shows how the situation has developed over the decades and what hurdles still exist.
The film is produced by an all-female team and is intended not only to shed light on the past, but also to highlight current challenges. Bronson emphasizes that many military leaders still oppose full equality for women in the service. Nevertheless, the women who are integrated into combat units today are motivated and competent, as one of the soldiers interviewed makes clear with the motto ‘Crush them with competence’.
