The German Nutrition Society said that folic acid is of great importance for the healthy and normal growth of the fetus. As it helps the neural tube develop properly, and then the brain and spinal cord, which prevents the child from suffering from paralysis and other serious physical disabilities, some of which last a lifetime.
The association added that adequately supplying the body with folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, prevents the child from suffering from a congenital heart defect, and it also reduces the chances of premature birth.
To help the fetus grow in a healthy and normal way, the German Nutrition Society recommended that women provide their body with folic acid early. You should start taking folic acid as soon as you want to have a baby, preferably three months before the planned pregnancy.
Daily intake and food sources
Pregnant women need 550 micrograms of folic acid daily, the food sources of which are:
– Green and leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, fennel, and asparagus
– Tomatoes and potatoes
– Acidic fruits such as oranges
– Whole grain products
– Legumes
– Eggs
– Nuts
Since folic acid is sensitive to heat, it is best to cook vegetables gently or eat them raw to maintain their nutritional value.
In the case of severe deficiency, one can also resort to taking nutritional supplements containing folic acid under the supervision of a doctor.
