Chelsea’s overwhelming victory over its guest Barcelona (3-0) at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League was not an exception, but rather reflects the growing strength of the English Premier League teams compared to their counterparts in the Spanish League.

The statistics speak for themselves, with the exception of Barcelona’s opening victory over Newcastle in mid-September (1-2), Spanish League teams have lost their eight direct matches against English Premier League teams since the start of the 2024-2025 Champions League group stage.

The Premier League is at the top of the Champions League standings

The results are not in the interest of the Spaniards, nor even the matches themselves. In the nine matches, the English Premier League clubs scored 19 goals and conceded only 4 goals.

Before tonight’s matches on Wednesday, Arsenal (1st in the league) is in second place in the Champions League table, Chelsea (2nd in the league) is in fifth place, Manchester City (3rd in the league) is in sixth place, Newcastle (14th in the league) is in eighth place, Liverpool (12th in the league) is in 10th place, and Tottenham (9th in the league) is in 12th place.

As for the Spanish League teams, Real Madrid (first in the league) ranks ninth, Barcelona (second in the league) ranks 14th, Atletico Madrid (fourth in the league) ranks twentieth, Athletic Bilbao (eighth in the league) ranks 28th, and Villarreal (third in the league) ranks 34th.

This dominance was evident last season, as the English clubs recorded 5 victories and 2 losses (scoring 13 goals and conceding 8), and the quarter-final match between Arsenal and Real Madrid ended, in principle, in favor of the Gunners (1-2 in the first leg, and 3-0 in the return leg).

However, it is impossible to compare the two leagues without pointing out the growing financial gap as the seasons progress. While Spanish clubs are burdened with debt, and Barcelona struggles to score new deals due to strict financial fair play rules, English Premier League teams spend (sometimes) lavishly during the transfer period. For example, Liverpool this summer spent more than 500 million euros.
