WEST PHILIPPINE SEA / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A joint patrol by US, Philippine and Japanese ships in the West Philippine Sea has drawn a sharp response from China. The recent joint patrol by US, Philippine and Japanese ships in the West Philippine Sea has further inflamed tensions in the region. This action, which took place on November 14, aimed to challenge China’s maritime claims, which continue to exist despite a 2016 Hague Tribunal ruling to the contrary. The patrol included movements of a US aircraft carrier and joint exercises intended to strengthen regional security.

China responded with sharp criticism, accusing the three nations of endangering stability in the region. According to a White House spokesman, the US government views China’s behavior as destabilizing and emphasizes that China’s extensive territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea undermine regional stability. The spokesman reiterated that Article IV of the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Philippines also applies to armed attacks on Filipino forces in the South China Sea.

The patrol follows a series of escalations in the region. Earlier this year, US forces sent two warships to a disputed reef in the South China Sea after a Chinese ship collided with a Philippine coast guard ship. These incidents highlight the increasing risk of confrontations between regional military powers.

China’s Southern Theater Command said its forces closely monitored the patrol and accused the three allies of increasing tensions. In a statement, a spokesman for the PLA Southern Theater Command called on the Philippines to refrain from provocations and escalations. Despite the tensions, the Philippine government plans to further deepen cooperation with the United States and Japan to defend their rights within their exclusive economic zone.
