A major program is being launched in Florida to help veterans navigate the difficult transition after military service. The Florida Veterans Coalition, led by Robby Groover, has partnered with organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul Cares to address the challenges many veterans face in the first 12 months after leaving service.
This time is particularly critical as many veterans lose the structure and support they are used to. Groover emphasizes that the loss of camaraderie and goal orientation often leads to problems finding housing and employment. The Florida Veterans Coalition created the Military to Veterans Support Program – Operation Safe Landing to facilitate this transition.
Another key partner is St. Vincent de Paul Cares, the largest homeless veterans organization in Florida. Ronald Lillard, the organization’s operations manager, explains that many veterans are struggling to adapt to new financial challenges because military service covered many costs. Working with the Coalition, more than 1,200 veterans in Florida, including 384 in Pinellas County, were placed in housing last year.
Government support is also an important part of the program. State Senator Nick Diceglie plans to allocate $500,000 from the state budget to promote the initiative. He emphasizes that it’s not just about getting veterans off the streets, but also offering them long-term prospects through housing and jobs. These measures are intended to help veterans live the American dream and shape their future successfully.
