Valve recently introduced the Steam Frame, the successor to the popular Valve Index VR glasses. This new generation promises numerous improvements affecting both technological and practical aspects. Particularly noteworthy is the significantly reduced weight of just 440 grams, which makes it more comfortable to wear over longer periods of time. In comparison, Sony’s wired PlayStation VR 2 is heavier, making the Steam Frame one of the lightest options on the market.
Another significant advancement is the wireless use of the Steam Frame, which no longer requires base stations. Thanks to the integration of four cameras and an IR sensor, the glasses can precisely record the position of the controllers and, theoretically, the user’s hands. This technology enables latency-free gaming and significantly improves the user experience. Valve has also increased the resolution of the displays, which results in a clearer and more detailed display.
Inside the Steam Frame, Valve has switched to pancake lenses, which make the headset more compact and lighter. However, these lenses require brighter panels, which is why OLED displays were not installed. Instead, Valve relies on an LC display with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, which can be achieved experimentally. These technical specifications show that Valve continues to focus on an optimized VR experience for PC, while other manufacturers such as Meta and Apple are developing their headsets towards extended reality (XR).
Another difference to the Valve Index are the integrated speakers, which are now installed as a module in the glasses and no longer sound directly into the ear. This creates a more spatial sound that spreads out in the room. However, there is no jack connection for headphones, which could be a disadvantage for some users. In terms of price, the Steam Frame is said to be cheaper than its predecessor, making it an attractive option for VR enthusiasts. The release is scheduled for early next year, and Valve has said it will provide more concrete information in the New Year.
