The Norwegian Walk, originally introduced by the Norwegian Army in 1915, serves as a benchmark for soldiers’ ability to cover long distances quickly and with full equipment. Such an event took place in Oregon this year, with 70 motivated soldiers and cadets from various units and universities taking part. Participants set off from Bake Stewart Park at dawn and set off along the Row River Trail to complete the 30km route.

The event was organized by the American Legion Calvin Funk Post #32 in Cottage Grove and offered soldiers the opportunity to earn the NFM badge, which can be worn on the U.S. Army uniform. Since the Norwegian Embassy authorized such marches to be held without direct supervision by Norwegian military personnel, these marches have become increasingly popular in the United States. For many soldiers, it is the only way to receive a foreign military badge.

Participants also included cadets from Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, who took the opportunity to demonstrate their endurance and teamwork skills. Gabriel Espinoza, an OSU cadet, posted the fastest time of the day with a time of 3 hours, 21 minutes. Naomi Foster, also from OSU, was the fastest female competitor and placed third overall.

The route of the march took participants through picturesque landscapes along the Dorena Reservoir, past historical film sets and over flat, easily accessible paths. The event was not only a test of physical endurance, but also an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the region. At the end of the day, 54 of the 70 participants had completed the requirements and received the NFM badge, making the event a great success.
