Apple plans to give the iPhone 17e a fresh design by making the display edges slimmer. This change comes as the company retains the iPhone 14’s tried-and-tested OLED panel to keep production costs down. The decision to reduce the bezels without changing the display panel shows Apple’s commitment to offering a modern look without compromising production efficiency.
Korean publication The Elec reports that BOE will supply the majority of the OLED panels for the iPhone 17e, with Samsung Display and LG Display contributing the rest. This collaboration underlines Apple’s strategy to involve multiple suppliers to ensure security of supply and optimize costs.
While some rumors suggest that the iPhone 17e could feature the Dynamic Island, this remains unconfirmed. Implementing this feature would require a major redesign of the TrueDepth camera and sensor array, which could conflict with Apple’s cost-saving strategy for the ‘e’ line. Retaining the notch could also help to differentiate the iPhone 17e from the premium models.
The iPhone 17e is expected to retain a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. BOE is currently unable to reliably produce LTPO panels for the iPhone 17 models, which is why it continues to use LTPS TFT panels. This decision reflects Apple’s focus on proven technologies to control production costs while offering an attractive product.
