In her morning conference this Wednesday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, stated that the Natural Disaster Fund (The foundation), trust eliminated during López Obrador’s six-year term, had no money, but “pure debts.”
With the emergency in Puebla, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí, the elimination of Fonden and its importance for disaster relief once again became a topic of discussion.
In this scenario, Sheinbaum exposed to “all those who continue to long for Fonden” an information note from October 2020 that indicated a debt of 13,123 million pesos. “This is how it was received by President López Obrador.”
“In other words, Fonden had no money. For all those who say ‘why did the trust fund, which was quite corrupt, disappear, because there are not enough resources?’there is always an item for emergencies, this year it has 19 billion pesos. And Fonden, in addition to a very bureaucratic scheme that took a long time to lower aid, a lot of corruption.
“And what he left to the López Obrador government was pure debt,” declared the federal president.
“Let people know that there are enough resources to support, both in the emergency and also, the support that many people are generously providing. But there are enough resources to attend to the emergency, to attend to the reconstruction and to support each home […]”he added.
Six days after the rains and floods, the President pointed out that there is “very detailed” information. He stated that the level of attention “is very extensive” due to the effects on these five states, and that there is a geographic information system for the reconstruction of bridges and roads.
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that in the governments of the self-called Fourth Transformation, emergencies have been attended to due to phenomena such as Hurricane Otis, which left damage in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero.
