Why is the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe celebrated on December 12?
The celebration of the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe has its origin in a historical event that occurred on December 12, 1531, when the Virgin Mary appeared for the fourth time to Juan Diego, an indigenous person from Cuautitlán, on the Tepeyac hill.
Juan Diego was looking for help for his uncle, who was seriously ill. It was at that moment when the Virgin revealed to him that his uncle had already healed and asked him to go to Bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga to request the construction of a temple in his honor.
As proof of the apparition, Juan Diego carried with him a cloak in which the Guadalupana Image appeared. This miracle, which occurred in front of the bishop, consolidated popular devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe and turned her into a symbol of faith and hope for the Mexican people.
