A major advance in archeology could soon allow researchers to detect pregnancies in ancient human remains. Scientists have developed a method to identify hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in the hard tissues of skeletons up to 1,000 years old. This discovery could help archaeologists better understand the reproductive history of women in the past.
The study, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, shows that these hormones can be detected in bones and teeth. Aimée Barlow, the study’s lead author and an archaeologist at the University of Sheffield, emphasizes that this is the first time that progesterone has been successfully measured in human bone tissue. This finding could make it possible to determine whether a woman was pregnant or had recently given birth at the time of her death.
The researchers used the enzyme immunoassay technique (ELISA) to analyze the hormones in the samples from seven female and three male skeletons. This method, already used to quantify peptide and protein molecules, could in the future help reconstruct the reproductive history of women in historical periods without written records.
Although the results are promising, experts emphasize that further testing and validation is needed. Nikolas Lemos, professor of forensic medical sciences at Queen Mary University of London, highlights that the sample size was small and the method cannot yet be considered a routine diagnostic tool. Nevertheless, the research represents a significant step toward better understanding the hormonal dimensions of living and dying in the past.
