American actress Scarlett Johansson is expected to star in a new independent film from the “The Exorcist” series, written and directed by Mike Flanagan, according to the “Deadline” website.
According to the site specialized in artistic affairs, Johansson’s nomination to play the lead role came after her great success this summer in the movie “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” whose revenues exceeded $868 million globally.

This is Johansson’s first actual experience in the horror category, in what represents a major shift in her diverse career, which included films such as “Marriage Story,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” and the “Avengers” film series, in which she played the role of Natasha Romanoff, in addition to her first directorial work this year, “Eleanor the Great.” Great).
The anticipated work will not be a sequel to the movie “The Exorcist: Believer,” which did not achieve the expected success despite star Ellen Burstyn’s performance in her original role. The film released in 2023 only achieved $136 million globally, which is a modest number compared to Universal’s investment of $400 million to obtain the rights to produce a new trilogy within this world.
For his part, director Mike Flanagan indicated, in a statement reported by the “Variety” website, that the original “The Exorcist” film, released in 1973, was one of the most prominent works that inspired him to enter the world of art.
He added, “Scarlett is a captivating actress who delivers a performance rooted in reality, whether in genre films or blockbusters, and I could not be more excited about her joining this project.”
Details of the story or the names of the other actors have not yet been revealed, and an official release date has not been announced yet, but filming is expected to begin in New York soon.
