The recent trip by senior U.S. military leaders to Nevada underscores the growing importance of integrating remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) and space operations. These two areas represent the future of warfare, delivering global effects from secure installations that themselves function as part of the weapon system. The visits to the 432nd and 328th Weapons Squadrons demonstrated how these technologies operate at the technological edge of the 21st century, enabling precise information dominance and multidimensional integration.

In opening the mission overview, Col. Kevin Auger, 432nd Squadron deputy commander, emphasized the structural changes that reduced personnel requirements without reducing operational requirements. He explained how infrastructure, communications, power reliability and medical support had to withstand significant stress. Auger highlighted that the MQ-9 weapons system encompasses more than just the aircraft itself, saying, “The facilities, the power systems, the network – all of that is part of the weapon. If they fail, the mission fails.”

USSPACECOM leaders’ observations in the MQ-9 simulator demonstrated how operators manage multispectral targeting systems, satellite-based navigation and precision timing – similar to spaceflight operators who control orbital trajectories, constellation behavior and data transport. Both communities transform massive, complex streams of information into fast, actionable decisions. These missions are conducted from fixed, secure installations, proving that the installation itself is a weapons platform.

Discussions with MQ-9 Airmen highlighted the challenges of maintaining a high cadence of operations, particularly in the face of increasing demands. Concerns about infrastructure deterioration and operational fatigue reflected themes raised during the leadership briefing. The MQ-9’s effectiveness is directly tied to USSPACECOM’s ability to ensure uncontested access to space.
