However, a promising approach to distinguishing between real and synthetic content could lie in the way voices sound. Experts have identified specific features that could indicate an artificial origin.
A striking feature is the so-called ‘AI accent’, which is characterized by an overly energetic and often unnaturally fast way of speaking. While humans tend to have a natural speech melody and rhythm, AI-generated voices tend to articulate words evenly and without pauses. This results in an over-caffeinated sound, which may indicate a synthetic source.
Another indication of AI-generated voices is unnatural coarticulation. Human voices create natural blends when transitioning from one sound to the next that are often missing in AI voices. These voices can therefore sound flat and sometimes even distorted as they have difficulty replicating natural pitches and transitions.
