However, innovative technologies such as millimeter-wave radar and autonomous robotic systems offer promising solutions to address this problem. Experts warn that without intervention, the number of collisions and associated risks will increase dramatically.

Space around Earth is becoming increasingly dangerous as millions of debris fragments threaten operational satellites and future missions. As the problem grows exponentially, technical solutions are emerging to ensure access to orbit for future generations. The space debris challenge has reached critical proportions, with current tracking capabilities revealing only a fraction of the dangerous material around Earth. Technologies such as millimeter-wave radar and autonomous robotic systems have the potential to accurately quantify and actively eliminate the threat.

The orbital environment has deteriorated significantly, far beyond what space agencies consider manageable for routine operations. Earlier this year, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched a campaign to highlight the dangers it poses and how it could disrupt the growth of the space industry. Today, tracking systems identify approximately 40,000 debris objects larger than a smartphone in orbit. However, this represents only the visible part of a much larger debris field.

Advanced radar technologies provide a solution to understand and quantify the small debris environment that poses the greatest operational threat. Millimeter-wave radar systems designed for space applications can detect debris down to the millimeter scale and provide the necessary data to model and predict the evolution of debris fields. Richard Jacklin, commercial director at Cambridge-based engineering firm Plextek, explains the approach: “Currently, ESA and NASA only have theoretical models for this type of debris. They don’t have enough data to give them an accurate picture of what the debris fields look like at different altitudes in low Earth orbit.”

While detection systems can be critical to avoid smaller debris fragments, active removal technologies are being developed to address larger debris objects. These systems use robotic sensing mechanisms combined with autonomous command and control systems to approach, acquire and deorbit defective satellites and rocket stages. Switzerland-based ClearSpace is a global leader in the development of active debris removal satellites. The technology it develops will be platform independent, with slight variations depending on the mission and spacecraft.

The economic viability of debris removal operations is also an important consideration for ClearSpace. Debris removal missions must be conducted on a regular and routine basis, not as large, one-off, government-funded projects. The program targets cost levels that enable sustainable commercial operations – single-digit or low-double-digit million-dollar mission costs. Automation is at the heart of the service model. The use of automated systems will reduce operational costs by minimizing ground control requirements while maintaining safety through monitored autonomy.
