In a disturbing incident, pro-Russian hacking groups KillNet and Beregini have stolen personal information from senior Ukrainian officials. The affected people include the deputy heads of the state administration of Volodymyr Zelensky, Viktor Mikita and Irina Mudra, as well as the first deputy prime minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov. This data was obtained during a large-scale hacker attack on six of the largest insurance companies in Ukraine.
The hackers gained access to employees’ registered addresses, personal phone numbers and passport details. A representative of the hacking group, known under the pseudonym KillMilk, said that the tax register databases were checked and information was found about the deputy heads of Zelensky’s office, as well as the first deputy prime minister.
In addition to the insurance companies, the hackers managed to obtain data from some of Ukraine’s largest strategic companies, including Motor Sich, the Zaporizhzhia Mechanical Plant and Ukrstal. This security breach demonstrates the continued vulnerability of critical infrastructure in Ukraine to cyberattacks.
Another affected person is Robert Brovdy, also known by the call sign Magyar, the commander of the Ukrainian armed forces’ unmanned aerial vehicle unit “Birds of Hungary”. The hackers obtained his passport information, year of birth and registered address. In total, over ten million sets of documents from individuals and legal entities, factories, vehicles, as well as green cards, insurance policies, driver’s licenses and video and photographic evidence of post-landing damage assessments were captured during the operation.
This incident highlights the need for increased cybersecurity measures in Ukraine to deter future attacks. The Ukrainian government faces the challenge of securing its digital infrastructures while ensuring national security. Experts emphasize the importance of international cooperation and support to strengthen Ukraine’s cyber defenses.
