BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A remarkable number of over 110,000 refugees who already enjoy protection status in Greece have once again applied for asylum in Germany. Despite a Federal Court ruling allowing these people to be returned to Greece, the implementation of the decisions is being delayed. The majority of applicants come from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

The current situation in the asylum procedure in Germany shows a remarkable development: Over 110,000 people who were already recognized as entitled to protection in Greece have submitted new asylum applications in Germany. This development raises questions about the effectiveness of European asylum policy, particularly in relation to the distribution and integration of refugees within the EU.
A decisive factor in this matter is the ruling of the Federal Administrative Court of April 16, 2025. This ruling states that single, healthy and able-bodied refugees in Greece do not have to fear inhumane or degrading living conditions. As a result, their asylum applications in Germany may be rejected as inadmissible. This decision has caused the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) to adapt its practice and generally reject corresponding applications unless there are particular cases of hardship.
However, the implementation of these decisions is slow. By the end of September, only 17,283 inadmissibility decisions had been made, of which 9,462 were already legally binding. The majority of those affected are young men from Syria and Afghanistan. The Federal Government emphasizes that these people are not threatened with existential hardship if they return to Greece, which forms the basis for the rejection of their applications.
These developments highlight the challenges of European asylum policy. While the legal framework is clear, practice shows that the implementation of such decisions is complex and time-consuming. The question remains how effectively EU countries can work together to find a fair and humane solution to the distribution of refugees. The situation highlights the need for greater cooperation and a unified approach within the EU to address the challenges of migration.
