US President Donald Trump said that the talks on Ukraine are going well and that there is a good chance of reaching an agreement on ending the war. He added that he wants to stop the war and that Ukraine and Russia also want that.

Trump stressed that this should be achieved, and that Ukraine faces some problems regarding corruption, which is an unhelpful factor, as he put it.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the head of the country’s delegation to the talks, Rustam Amirov, gave him a preliminary briefing on the talks that took place with the American side.

He added that the dialogue witnessed a constructive approach and frank presentation of all issues related to Ukraine’s sovereignty and national interests, adding in a statement that the time that the United States, and President Trump’s team personally, is devoting to determining the necessary steps to end the war, indicates the seriousness of the joint efforts.

Zelensky expressed his gratitude for this, explaining that he was awaiting a detailed report from his team during a personal meeting soon, and stressing the continuation of work on the next steps towards ending the war.

After the meeting, Amirov described the talks as fruitful. “We discussed all important issues for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, and the United States shows strong support,” he said.

American and Ukrainian officials held what they described as constructive talks yesterday, Sunday, about a peace agreement with Russia, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his optimism about progress despite the challenges that impede ending the war that has been going on for more than 3 years.

“We continue to be realistic about how difficult this is going to be, but we are optimistic, especially in light of the fact that as we make progress, I think there is a shared vision here that this is not just about ending the war but ensuring Ukraine’s future,” Rubio said in Hallandale Beach, Florida, where the meeting took place.

The Florida discussions come after nearly two weeks of negotiations that began with an American peace plan that critics said was initially in Russia’s interest, especially in light of reports of pressure from the Trump team on Ukraine to make major concessions, including giving up territory to Russia.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, participated in the meeting to represent the American side. Witkopf is expected to meet with Russian officials this week.

The Ukrainian leadership, facing a domestic political crisis fueled by an investigation into widespread accusations of graft in the energy sector, is seeking to reject conditions that favor Moscow at a time when Russian forces are advancing along the front lines of the war.
