The planned creation of a joint venture between the space divisions of Airbus, Leonardo and Thales Alenia Space has raised concerns at OHB, a leading German space company. Marco Fuchs, the CEO of OHB, expressed concerns about the impact of this collaboration on his company’s competitiveness in the European space sector in a recent earnings call.
Fuchs emphasized that the consolidation of the three major competitors represents a challenge for OHB, especially since the company has already worked with Thales Alenia Space. This new alliance could significantly impact OHB’s collaboration opportunities and supply chain. The three companies signed a memorandum of understanding in October to form the joint venture, codenamed Project Bromo.
The companies involved argue that the joint venture is necessary in order to keep up with US competitors. Fuchs, on the other hand, questions the necessity of this consolidation in a growing market and sees OHB’s European business strategy under pressure. He emphasizes that institutional customers continue to rely on competitive offers and OHB will actively communicate its concerns.
At the same time, OHB also sees opportunities from increasing spending by European governments in the space sector. Germany plans to invest 35 billion euros in military space systems over the next five years. OHB also expects additional civil space spending as soon as the European Space Agency (ESA) sets its budget for the next three years.
In order to respond to the growing demands in the space sector, OHB recently announced the founding of the European Spaceport Company. This new venture aims to promote the development of space launch sites in Europe, including mobile platforms in the North Sea region. OHB plans to use its expertise in launch site infrastructure to provide Europe with a more resilient space infrastructure.
