The Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach is known for its annual events that attract both history buffs and families. This year, the popular ‘Planes, Trains and Santa’ event returns, running through the end of Thanksgiving weekend. Visitors can look forward to elaborate model railway layouts and see Santa Claus landing every morning at 10 a.m.
A special highlight this year is the exhibition ‘The Longest Yarn’, which comes from France. This 200-foot-long textile installation depicts key moments from the Battle of Normandy in three-dimensional knitting and crochet work. Created by over 100 artists, including a Hampton Roads artist, the exhibit honors the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.
The exhibition is currently touring the United States, stopping only at four select locations. As part of the exhibition, the museum sells knitted poppies that visitors can purchase. The aim is to fill an entire wall with these poppies and send them back as a gift to France, where they will be displayed alongside the exhibition in the long term.
Keegan Chetwynd, the director of the Military Aviation Museum, emphasizes the importance of this gesture: ‘Our goal is to fill this entire white wall with poppies and send them back with the exhibition as a gift from us to the French, who will display this in the long term.’ Tickets for ‘Planes, Trains and Santa’ are still available and more information can be found on the museum’s website.
