CHARLOTTESVILLE / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Researchers at the University of Virginia have discovered a promising approach to treating Alzheimer’s disease. By protecting the so-called perineuronal networks in the brain, patients’ social memories could be preserved. This discovery could fundamentally change the way Alzheimer’s is understood and treated.

Alzheimer’s disease places an immense burden on many families, especially when loved ones no longer recognize their loved ones. A new study from the University of Virginia could now shed light on the matter and offer an innovative treatment approach. Researchers led by Harald Sontheimer and Lata Chaunsali have discovered that the loss of social memories in Alzheimer’s patients is linked to the breakdown of perineuronal networks in the brain.

These web-like structures surround neurons and play a crucial role in storing social memories. Experiments with mice showed that protecting these networks with MMP inhibitors can prevent the loss of social memories. These inhibitors, which are already being investigated in cancer and arthritis research, could therefore also represent a new therapeutic option for Alzheimer’s disease.

What is particularly noteworthy is that this mechanism works independently of the well-known amyloid pathology, which was previously considered the main cause of Alzheimer’s. This could revolutionize understanding of the disease and open up new avenues for treatment. However, researchers emphasize that further research is needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of this method in humans.

The results of the study were published in the specialist journal “Alzheimer’s & Dementia” and have generated great interest among experts. The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Owens Family Foundation, among others. These findings could be an important step towards more effective treatment of Alzheimer’s, giving new hope to patients and their families.
