Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) students have taken a significant step into space with their Lunabotics project. The team, known as the Space Raiders, was recently immortalized in a satellite photo in orbit around Earth. This opportunity arose through the CrunchLabs Satellite Photo Program, which allows so-called ‘space selfies’ to be placed on a satellite orbiting 300 miles above Earth.
At a speed of 17,000 miles per hour, the SATGUS satellite orbits the Earth every 90 minutes and displays selected photos. It was a surreal moment for the Space Raiders when their team photo was chosen. Mitchell Brust, the vice president of the Space Raiders, described the feeling as a mix of disbelief and excitement. This recognition strengthened the team and prepared them for the challenges ahead.
The team is currently preparing for the NASA Lunabotics Challenge at Kennedy Space Center. The goal is to reach one of the top five places with your robot. During the academic year, students work to develop their skills in robotics, automation and systems engineering. New members are integrated and the lunar robot is tested and further developed.
Support from MSOE faculty, the STEM Center and sponsors plays a critical role in the success of the Space Raiders. Brust emphasized that opportunities like the satellite photo shine a spotlight on the team’s passion and dedication. The Space Raiders are proud to represent MSOE at this year’s NASA Lunabotics Challenge.
