Active military personnel in the US had their salaries paid on October 15 despite the ongoing government shutdown. That payout came after an order from President Donald Trump, who directed the Pentagon to reallocate $6.5 billion of unused funds to shore up salaries. This measure affected approximately 1.2 million active duty, National Guard and Reserve members.
The shutdown, which entered its 15th day on October 15, shows no signs of ending any time soon as negotiations between Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked. Despite the uncertainties, service members remained deployed because their work is considered essential to national security.
While active-duty members received their salaries, more than 32,000 full-time National Guard and Reserve members remain without pay. Many training missions have been canceled and the Pentagon’s civilian workforce, including so-called dual status civilian technicians, also remains unpaid.
The future of salary payments remains uncertain, as the next payment on October 31st is at risk if the shutdown is not ended by then. House Speaker Mike Johnson warned that the current solution is not permanent and troops could potentially be left without pay at the end of the month if a deal is not reached.
