Microsoft has a new feature in testing for Windows 11 that aims to shorten File Explorer startup times and improve overall performance. This feature, currently available to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels, allows File Explorer to preload in the background. This is intended to allow users to benefit from faster access times without making any visible changes to the user interface.
The preload feature is optional and can be disabled in File Explorer’s folder options under the ‘View’ tab. Microsoft encourages users to test the feature and provide feedback via the Feedback Hub, especially if issues arise. This initiative follows the May 2025 launch of Startup Boost, a similar feature for Office applications that improves startup times by automatically loading in the background.
In addition to File Explorer performance improvements, Microsoft is working on updating the context menu to improve clarity. Actions like ‘Compress to ZIP File’, ‘Copy as Path’ and ‘Set as Desktop Background’ are moved to a new ‘Manage File’ flyout menu. These changes are intended to increase usability by better grouping less frequently used actions.
The new features are part of a broader update introduced with preview release 26220.7271 (KB5070307). Microsoft plans to potentially change the Manage File label based on user feedback. These developments demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to continually improving the user experience and responding to community feedback.
