REDMOND / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Microsoft has introduced a significant security change with the latest update for Windows 11. Systems with duplicate computer SIDs will be blocked in the future, which can cause problems, especially with clone installations. This measure aims to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Microsoft recently released a significant update for Windows 11 that significantly tightens security requirements for versions 24H2 and 25H2. This innovation particularly affects the use of computer SIDs, which must now be unique in order to minimize security risks. The change aims to prevent authentication of devices with identical SIDs, which has previously been a vulnerability in corporate and personal environments.

The introduction of this security measure means that systems with duplicate SIDs will no longer have access to shared network drives or remote desktop connections. This is a crucial step to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data that was possible through cloning Windows installations. Microsoft therefore recommends using Sysprep, a Windows proprietary tool that generalizes system images and ensures that each installation receives a unique SID.

However, some challenges may arise for users who have already installed Windows 11 25H2 or are using cloned systems. This includes repeated login requests despite correct access data as well as error messages such as “Login failed” or “Your credentials didn’t work”. Access to shared network folders or remote desktop sessions may also be restricted, which is particularly important for IT administrators and power users.

These changes are part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security on corporate networks. Eliminating duplicate SIDs improves the integrity of NTLM and Kerberos logins, which is an important step toward secure enterprise environments. However, the measure could also lead to increased effort in managing Windows installations, especially for companies that have relied on cloning methods without Sysprep.

Overall, it shows that Microsoft is making an important contribution to improving network security with this security change. The evolution of Windows from a simple graphical attachment for MS-DOS to a modern operating system with AI integration reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to meet the demands of the digital world. This latest change highlights the importance of security measures in an increasingly connected world.
