In London, Chancellor Friedrich Merz clarified his controversial statement about the cityscape and migration. He explained that he was referring to migrants with no right of residence, no work and no respect for the rules. This group shapes the image in city centers, train stations and parks in many places and contributes to many people feeling unsafe in public spaces.

However, Merz emphasized that Germany still needs immigration, especially for the labor market. People with a migration background have long been an indispensable part of society. Problems only arise where integration is refused.

A survey by the opinion research institute INSA on behalf of the Bild newspaper shows that many citizens share his assessment. 43% of Germans think the cityscape has changed for the worse in the last ten years, and 39% feel more unsafe than in 2015.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil criticized Merz for using language to divide, while the FDP showed understanding but called for more precise formulations. At the EU summit in Brussels, the Chancellor now wants to talk again about a common asylum and return policy in order to restore trust in the rule of law.
