He argues that technological openness is crucial to promote innovation in the automotive industry. Merz emphasizes that Germany can only remain competitive if it considers alternative drive technologies such as hybrid engines and new developments.
Merz expressed his concerns at a CDU state party conference in Saxony-Anhalt. He emphasized that although electromobility is currently the focus, it is not the only solution to the challenges of the future. The consideration of alternatives is necessary in order not to endanger technological progress.
In a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the CDU, CSU and SPD called for a rethink on the strict ban on combustion engines.
