There are internal complaints in the PAN about the non-transparent management of millionaire resources
Writing
The assets of the current multi-member Senator and former national leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Marko Cortés Mendoza, has experienced notable and questioned financial growth, especially after his recent assumption of the legislative seat secured after the 2024 electoral defeat. This equity increase It coincides with a persistent opacity in its finances and recurring internal complaints in the PAN about the non-transparent management of millionaire resources.
Real Estate Acquisition in Euros Raises Suspicions
The recent asset declaration presented by Cortés before the Internal Comptroller of the Senate, corresponding to May 2025, reveals a particularly significant acquisition: an apartment paid in cash in January of this year for 565 thousand euros, equivalent to approximately 12 million Mexican pesos. The location of this property was not specified.
This millionaire purchase had already been anticipated by the Senator from Morena, Gerardo Fernández Noronawho last August pointed out the transaction, suggesting that the acquisition sought to divert attention from a previous and similar purchase of a house in Tepoztlán, Morelos.
Six-year Opacity and Undetailed Assets
A central point of controversy is that the asset declarations of 2024 and 2025 are the only public information about Cortés’s assets. During the six years that he was at the head of the PAN, from November 2018 to November 2024, the PAN leader failed to comply with the obligation to make his statements public, despite the provisions of the General Transparency Law.
The most recent statement also does not clarify whether two ranches dedicated to growing avocados in Jalisco are included in its property list. The existence of these properties is confirmed by certifications from the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) granted in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Cortés has two concessions from the National Water Commission (Conagua) for agricultural use, which give it a total volume of 182 thousand cubic meters annually. The first was received in 2016 and the second, in 2021.
Concentration of Purchases during the Partisan Leadership
Most of the Senator’s high-cost assets were acquired precisely while he was president of the PAN. Just two months into his party mandate, in January 2019, he bought a house on credit valued at 9 million pesos. At that time, and until 2024, his monthly net salary was $156,571 pesos.
Another notable transaction was the acquisition of land on credit for $1,840,116 pesos in June 2022. This purchase was made just 19 days after the gubernatorial elections in six states, a day where the coalition led by the PAN He only achieved victory in Aguascalientes.
Electoral Failures and Internal Criticism: Cortés’ management was also the target of harsh internal reproaches. PAN members pointed out their lack of self-criticism and responsibility for the party’s electoral decline, aggravated by the alliance with the PRI and the defunct PRD. Upon assuming leadership in 2018, the PAN governed 11 states; However, accumulated defeats marked his period.
