Recent collective bargaining negotiations between Lufthansa and the Cockpit (VC) pilots’ association have ended without a result, raising the possibility of a full-scale strike by pilots. The union plans to discuss how to proceed next week. The focus of the discussions is the future of the medium-haul fleet and the company pensions of around 4,800 pilots.
The discussions revolved around a comprehensive concept for Lufthansa’s European fleet, which also includes the subsidiaries City Airlines and Discover. The VC is seeking collective agreements that take into account the interests of the pilots at these subsidiaries. However, Lufthansa management has made offers that involve significant concessions from the pilots, which the union considers unacceptable.
Another central point of the collective bargaining dispute is the pilots’ company pensions. The union is demanding a tripling of the employer’s share, which has not been achieved in the previous seven rounds of negotiations. The pilots are only allowed to strike for goals that can be achieved according to the collective agreement, which makes negotiations even more difficult.
Lufthansa continues to rely on talks, while the VC is able to start a strike at the Lufthansa core brand and the cargo subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo at any time after a strike vote. The relocation of the medium-haul fleet to the subsidiaries could mean fewer jobs and career opportunities for Lufthansa pilots, which is prompting the union to take decisive action.
