A recent American study revealed that even limited smoking from time to time can cause serious heart health problems.
Researchers from several American research institutions, including the Johns Hopkins Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, stated that smoking two to five cigarettes per day increases the risk of heart attacks and death.
The researchers analyzed the results of 22 research papers that included monitoring the health status of more than 300,000 adults over a period of 20 years.
The results of the study published by the scientific journal “Plus Medicine” showed that people who smoke between two and five cigarettes per day increase their chances of developing heart disease by 50%, and their chances of death increase by 60% compared to non-smokers.
The study showed that the degree of risk decreases significantly 10 years after quitting smoking, although the harms of smoking to health continue up to 30 years after quitting.
Researchers participating in the study stated, “It is noted that smoking carries significant risks to the heart and blood vessels, even in the case of limited doses.”
They added in statements to the “HealthDay” website, which is concerned with medical research, that “the results of this study highlight the importance of abstinence and smoking cessation programs.”
