Fourteen cases of Legionnaires’ disease were recently confirmed in Central Florida, all linked to gym attendance. Florida health officials shared this information with State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith. Although the name of the affected gym was not officially released, members of Crunch Fitness in Ocoee reported illnesses.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium. These bacteria are commonly found in water systems such as showers and large air conditioners. The disease is not transmitted from person to person, but by inhaling water particles.
Crunch Fitness has closed portions of the studio in response to the incidents and is conducting extensive water testing. These measures are carried out in collaboration with the health authority to identify the source of the infection.
