The British government has announced an ambitious project to modernize military housing to be implemented over the next decade. With a budget of £9 billion, the Ministry of Defense plans to renovate, modernize or build almost all of the 47,700 homes for military families. Defense Secretary John Healey described it as the largest overhaul of armed forces accommodation in more than 50 years.
This initiative is in response to continued complaints from military personnel about the condition of their housing. As early as 2022, numerous families reported to the BBC that they had to live in damp, moldy apartments without heating. A report by the House of Commons defense committee found that two-thirds of service family homes require major renovation or new construction to meet modern standards.
As part of the new strategy, the service families’ accommodation will be equipped with new kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems. Around 14,000 of these apartments will either be extensively renovated or completely replaced. These plans are part of the government’s wider defense housing strategy, due to be published on Monday. £4 billion has previously been announced to tackle the housing problem.
The government has also identified surplus Defense Ministry land that could be used to build 100,000 new homes for civilian and military families. Healey stressed that this was a new phase that represents a decisive break with decades of underfunding and represents a building program to support British military families and stimulate economic growth across the country.
