In a remarkable initiative, Kaufland in Mosbach has launched a pilot project that enables video consultations directly in its supermarket branches. This measure aims to alleviate the acute shortage of doctors in rural areas and could fundamentally change the way medical services are delivered. Customers have the opportunity to communicate with doctors via video in a specially designed room, allowing for flexible and accessible healthcare.

Technology plays a central role in this project. Consultations are usually accessed via a smartphone, with patients able to receive medical advice in a soundproof room. In addition, medical assistants are available to carry out basic examinations such as blood pressure or ECG measurements. If necessary, direct contact with a doctor is also provided, which further increases the quality of care.

The background to this initiative is the increasing shortage of doctors in Germany. According to a study by the Bertelsmann Foundation, over 5,000 family doctor positions are unfilled, leading to longer waiting times and overcrowded practices. Kaufland’s approach to integrating medical services into people’s everyday lives could provide a solution to this growing problem and significantly improve access to medical care.

The trend to integrate medical services into standard business models is already having an impact. In addition to Kaufland, the drugstore chain dm has also announced that it will sell pharmacy-only but over-the-counter products. Lidl and Rossmann are also planning to enter the market for over-the-counter preparations. These developments could permanently change healthcare in Germany and make access to medical products and services easier.
