Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz banned Israeli army commanders from making any statements to journalists without his direct approval, in a radical change to the procedures followed for a long time, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
Katz ordered the spokesman for the Israeli army, Evi Devrin, to stop all interviews and press conferences held by senior leaders in the army with journalists, unless he obtained prior permission from him, and he also instructed Devrin to obtain his approval for every press conference or media update.
New terms
Under the new directive, Katz must be informed of the identities of the journalist and the officer with whom the interview will be conducted, in addition to the topics and topics that will be discussed.
Haaretz quoted military sources as saying that the order was issued a month ago, after Katz became angry at media reports that he considered to belittle Israel’s achievements in the Gaza Strip.
An exception to the new instructions of the Minister of Defense is the Israeli army spokesman, as he is allowed to speak to journalists and the public without requiring prior approval.
