The judges of Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court today decided to put one of the sons of former President Jair Bolsonaro on trial, accused of obstructing justice in the case of his father’s attempted coup d’état.
Judges Flávio Dino and Cristiano Zanin joined their colleague Alexandre de Moraes, who was appointed to gather preliminary information on the case, accepting an indictment from the Public Ministry that alleges that Eduardo Bolsonaro used violence or serious threats to interfere in a judicial process, reports the American news agency, the Associated Press, adding that, if convicted, he will face one to four years in prison and a fine.
Prosecutors stated that Eduardo Bolsonaro tried to interfere in his father’s trial, urging foreign governments to put pressure on Brazilian authorities, including threats against the country’s economy, in an apparent reference to several North American leaders, including the President, who came to Bolsonaro’s defense, and the increase in tariffs enacted as a result.
