Sushi Mobility GmbH, an e-bike startup that started in 2018 with great ambitions, is now facing closure. Founded by Joko Winterscheidt and other investors, the company wanted to appeal primarily to millennials with its simple, modern e-bikes. In 2019 and 2020, the company benefited from a Europe-wide boom in bicycle sales, which increased by 40 percent.

But the pandemic, which initially caused a surge in demand, ultimately led to market saturation and a decline in interest. The economic challenges became insurmountable for Sushi Mobility, which ultimately led to bankruptcy. According to industry reports, the company’s debt burden now amounts to 4.3 million euros.

Joko Winterscheidt, who not only acted as an investor but also as a co-founder of the company, withdrew as a partner in April 2024. Despite the bankruptcy, there is still hope that a buyer could be found to take over the company and possibly get it back on track.

The entire e-bike industry is currently facing major challenges. Many companies are struggling with the aftereffects of the pandemic and the associated economic uncertainties. However, experts still see potential in the e-bike market, especially when it comes to sustainable mobility solutions. Whether Sushi Mobility can benefit from these developments remains to be seen.
