She added, “During Trump’s first presidency, I was running like a terrified chicken without a head. But now, I am reevaluating my position because I simply do not want to be part of the problem.”

She continued, “Celebrities do not change the results of voting, so why should I present an opinion that adds nothing but fuel to the fire? I want to protect my art. I want people to be able to get lost in what I present, not to be alienated by my opinions.”

When New York Times journalist Lulu Garcia Navarro asked her if she regretted her previous frankness, she replied with a sarcastic smile: “Mostly! I regret everything I said or did in my life. I will take the memory disks from all the cameras before I leave.”

For her, the next election cycle in the United States looks radically different, “because this time we know exactly what he did, and what he intends to do, and yet it was our choice.”

Returning to the screen after motherhood

Lawrence is preparing to appear in a new film called “Die My Love,” which is an adaptation of the Argentine Ariana Harovich novel, and which she is producing in collaboration with American director Martin Scorsese. The film deals with the story of “Grace”, a mother who suffers from deep psychological disorders, in a dramatic narrative that intersects with Lawrence’s personal experience.

About this experience, she says, “I read the novel after having my first child, and I felt an immediate connection. I did not suffer from postpartum depression in the classic sense, and this allowed me to delve into those dark areas of the text.”

In her analysis of Grace’s character, Lawrence avoids any specific psychological classification; “Some critics said she was suffering from psychosis, depression, or bipolar disorder. But I didn’t approach it from that angle. To me, it was a complicated, sad, tense, and angry case.”

She adds that a mental health specialist told her that suicide is the number one cause of maternal death in the first year after giving birth. “This changed a lot of our understanding of the end of the movie, especially the scene of the forest and the fire… I saw it as a kind of purification.”

Experiencing postpartum depression

Lawrence told the New York Times that she “went through a bitter experience” when she gave birth to her second child. “I was living as if I was being chased by a tiger. Extreme anxiety, compulsive thoughts that did not stop, and obsessions related to my child’s safety.”

The 35-year-old actress admitted that she lives with a constant feeling of guilt, despite her awareness that she is a “good mother.”

The most prominent challenges she faces are balancing motherhood and art. “Motherhood is an act of sacrifice. But it is not alone. Art is also part of my identity. Without acting, I would not be complete.”

She continued, “After giving birth to my first son, I told myself that acting was the ideal job for a mother. But now I’m reconsidering. I used to say that in the time of Covid. Things are more complicated.”

New work with Scorsese
