Iran announced the dismantling of a spy network that it said was operating under the guidance of American and Israeli intelligence services, months after the 12-day war between the Islamic Republic and Israel.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Intelligence Service stated, in a statement broadcast on state television, yesterday, Tuesday, that “a cell hostile to national security in Iran, which was active under the guidance of American and Israeli spy services, had been uncovered and dismantled.”
The agency indicated that the operation was carried out in a coordinated manner in a number of governorates, without providing additional details about the locations of implementation or the number of those arrested.
Last June, Israel launched unprecedented strikes against Iran, which led to the killing of hundreds of people, including senior officers and nuclear scientists, while Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel, resulting in more than 25 deaths.
The United States, Israel’s main ally, also participated in these confrontations by carrying out raids on Iranian nuclear facilities, before a ceasefire took effect between the two sides on June 24.
During recent months, the Iranian authorities announced the implementation of a series of arrests and death sentences against people convicted of spying for Israel. Last October, the Iranian parliament also approved a new law that tightens penalties on those accused of cooperating with foreign intelligence services, especially American and Israeli.
