The Ernst May Prize 2023 has once again drawn attention to the challenges and opportunities of social housing in Frankfurt. Katharina Lore Meyer, the winner of the 10,000 euro prize, impressed the jury with her comprehensive approach to the redesign of a NHW high-rise building in the Ben-Gurion Ring. Her design combines functional and contemporary design with energy requirements and social functions, which earned her first place and 3,000 euros.
The competition, which has been organized by the NHW in collaboration with TU Darmstadt for almost 40 years, asked students to develop creative and realistic design strategies for the conversion of buildings from the 1950s to the 1970s. The focus was not only on energy-saving renovations, but also on adapting to the living and living needs of the future. The jury, consisting of experts from architecture and urban planning, evaluated a total of 17 submitted works.
Katharina Lore Meyer’s design impressed with the integration of bio-based building materials such as cork and the use of photovoltaics. Its innovative “social façade” promotes neighborly exchange and offers practical functions such as drying laundry. These approaches show how important it is to integrate social and ecological aspects into architecture in order to create sustainable and livable living spaces.
The award ceremony in the atrium of the City of Frankfurt Planning Office offered the participants the opportunity to present their work to a broad audience. The exhibition of the designs, which will take place from November 7th to 19th, is intended to raise public awareness of the importance of innovative living concepts. The Ernst May Prize not only promotes the examination of current challenges in housing construction, but also the development of sustainable solutions that meet social and economic requirements.
